Here’s a story I just heard from Les Brown, the famous motivational speaker.
This story starts before he became a famous public speaker.
In fact, he wanted to be a public speaker for years before he got started.
But, he was like many people…he had friends and family that actually encouraged him to peruse his dream of being a public speaker because they could tell how good he was
but like most others, he kept saying to himself “how can I compete with these others speakers?
“They have PhDs MBAs…
Some have money or connections or corporate experience…”
“I dont even have a college education…”
so, like most people he would attend seminars and read books about public speaking thinking that with enough knowledge, he would just find himself speaking to a crowd or something (lol)
Anyway, at one day, while attended a national speaking convention, Les was listening to a presenter talk.
This dude was hella boring!
Dry, and almost lifeless.
But then he said something that changed Les life forever…
This speaker said:
“I know I’m dont have charisma.
I know I dont have energy.
I know I’m not animated like many of you here
but the reason why I’m here holding this microphone up on stage while you are sitting there listening to me is because I represent the thoughts you rejected for yourself.”
Powerful.
When Les held himself back, this boring ass speaker with much less talent went for it!
They had the same ideas, but Les didnt do them, this less talented speaker did, and look at the result.
Think about all the times you talked yourself out of doing things that would improve your life
allow you to follow your dream
or to just be happier.
but you talk yourself out of it!
Hell, if others heard how you speak to yourself, they would think you are in abusive relationship!
One more thing to think about…
have you ever seen a person, business, organization, whatever that is doing something that you either wanted to do, or are doing but you aren’t as big as them?
I’m not talking about a mega company vs your small mom and pop shop
I’m talking about someone in similar space/business/industry that got started around the same time you did (or maybe started later than you) but they have more success than you.
What excuses did you start to have in your head?
Did you start to tell yourself that they were lucky?
Did you think to yourself that they must be smarter?
Or that they have better connections or money?
No matter what you told yourself, odds are is that person/business/organization represents the ideas that YOU have rejected for YOURSELF.
When you rejected those ideas, they ran with it!
They may not have the same skill or passion as you, but maybe they have more drive to work with what they have.
So, maybe its time to stop rejecting those ideas and thoughts and maybe its just time to get started
