Have you seen the movie “The Social Network?”
If not, it’s a movie about the founding of Facebook…it’s pretty entertaining and worth a watch.
Anyway, there’s a scene in The Social Network that sticks out to me because of how my attitude has changed in the last few years.
As you know, I was a software engineer for 11 years.
During that time, I would participate in many forums to get questions answered, and to help others by answering their questions.
But, one thing that used to bother me is the way some people (who I assume were teenagers) would call themselves CEO of their own company.
I was like “you aint no company, you haven’t done shit yet!”
Now, I see things different…
Don’t get me wrong, teens and young adults who have “companies” without a product (meaning these guys never finished the game/software they were working on) can’t say they have a business
They haven’t made any money, or added any value to the market!
But, now-a-days, when I see such things, I now think it’s good that they call themselves CEO because of one scene in “The Social Network”
Ya see, Sean Parker tells Mark Zuckerberg to have business cards printed up saying,
“I’m CEO, bitch.”
Why?
Because he needed to show people (and himself) that he was in charge of his business.
That he is a leader and is building something great…even if he or the product isn’t great yet.
And that’s must be the attitude we all need as you start your business.
You’re the CEO, bitch.
Remember, there are no rules that say you can officially call yourself the CEO when you get to 20 employees…
Or after you make a certain amount of money.
That’s not how it should work.
The only question is, “Are you the leader of your company?”
If you’re the leader then you’re the CEO, bitch.
How do you know if you are the leader?
Do you make swift and decisive decisions?
Do you take complete ownership for what happens to you and your company, no matter what?
Are you constantly improving yourself and your business by learning skills and applying what you currently know?
If so, then yes, you can call yourself a CEO…bitch, lol
