So, check out this conversation I just had…
Someone was giving out advice basically saying more things people offered should be free.
On the surface, that sounds good right?
Especially to a consumer-minded person.
I of course disagreed with that.
Mostly for the fact that people don’t value free, no matter how good the product or service is.
Now, here’s the thing, I grew up and still live in San Francisco…
This city is as liberal as they come, so i hear this shit here too.
But, being in this city (the city I love) has shown me, “not all that glitters is gold”
So, I seen the good and the bad of being in a very liberal city.
And one thing I’ve noticed is a certain mentality about value and money with some people.
This was perfectly summed up in a reply to my disagreement:
And it reads:
I understand the theory behind ‘people don’t value free’ but I think it’s a misunderstood cliché. Many people value being powerfully served and will become your most loyal clients or your most ardent promoters. As for your time being too valuable to give away, that’s up to you. I make a distinction between a ‘give and take’ world and a ‘give and get back’ world. I’d rather live in the second one.
I replied and let that person know if all the free shit I do have (emails I send out every day, YouTube vids, Facebook group, this blog, etc.)
But some people think you should give away your best shit for free!
(Never do that! Try going into a Best buy and asking for a free TV, see how that goes)
I understand the dream world this person wishes existed, but what is REALITY?
The reality is, you need to understand where the people you want to help are (in mindset)
And what rules you must work within to reach and help them!
Normally, that means people pay for things they value, and wont value things they dont pay for!
My time and experience will change your life if you let it, but it’s hard to see that if I treat it like its worthless!
In my experience, people who say things like “we should live in a give and get back world” are the ones who don’t make any money because:
1) they cant figure out how to make sales, so they wish things were different
2) they have deep money issues themselves.
They don’t like sales and money because they think that stuff is evil or whatever
(a defense mechanism only poor and broke people use)
Then they try to justify their issue with some new age BS and twisting the law of attraction around to fit their agenda.
The real question is, are these same people successful in the classical sense?
I’m sure if you ask them, they will put all sorts of asterisk and caveats on their response.
Saying shit like “well, I feel I’m successful” or “success is a frame of mind”
It’s just more lies they tell themselves.
Thats another way to say “I’m not making much money, and I dont know why”
(even if you arent making money yet, but you know why, you are ahead of the game)
Let me leave you with a quote I have to remind myself of often:
“Dont wish things were easier, wish that you were better!” – Jim Rohn
If you are looking to get better at what you do, let’s set up a time to talk about it.
